Stephen Appiah Questions Black Stars’ Leadership

Former captain of the Black Stars, Stephen Appiah, has expressed concerns about the lack of leadership within the current Black Stars setup.

The senior men’s national team of Ghana has struggled for results in recent competitive games over the years, exiting the last Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast at the group stage.

The team is yet to pick a win in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifies following a 1:0 home defeat against Angola and a one-all draw against Niger.

In the wake of the struggles, Stephen Appiah believes that the Black Stars has weak leadership, which, in a way, has affected the commitment of the team.

“I don’t see leadership in the current Black Stars. Now I’m not seeing the captain leading the team. When it happens like that, players can think they can do whatever they want.” Stephen Appiah spoke before the Parliamentary Select Committee.

“As a leader, you have to lead. Certain decisions will not be popular with the players but you will have to take them. Now I am not seeing that with the team.” He added.

Andre Ayew remains the captain of the players despite his absence in the recent Black Stars’ call-up by head coach Otoo Addo.

In Ayew’s absence, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has captained the team in the various qualifying games.
